WESTCAM & the “young and wild”

They are young. They step on the gas. And they know exactly what they want… We are talking about the future technology experts – or the “young savages”, as we call them.

Young, wild & tech-savvy? This way, please!

At WESTCAM, we love everything that is new and has a WOW factor. This means innovative technologies, of course, but also young talent. That’s why we work with schools and training companies to shake up traditional teaching. Or lend a hand with student projects when 3DMetrology or 3D printing technology is required. The only requirement? The “young savages” have to allow us to get involved.

Young technology freaks with heart & brain

WESTCAM & students: Idea-WOW meets Know-WOW

You have the ideas, we have the technology: when the idea-WOW of students meets the know-how-WOW of our experts, sparks fly. For example on the Formula 1 race tracks in Italy, Austria, Germany and Japan. That’s where the FH Joanneum Graz racing team puts the pedal to the metal with their racing cars – thanks to their self-developed turbocharger, they are right at the front!

For the new, optimized engine “Made in Austria”, the racing team enlisted the support of WESTCAM Know-WOW and Technik: using 3D-Metrology, a tried and tested turbocharger was scanned and measured and converted into an exact 3D CAD model. Using the model, the students were able to rebuild the turbocharger and make the decisive improvements – and then speed away from the competition on the race track!

The fast and the furious – powered by WESTCAM & E-Mobility

The Campus Tirol Motorsport Team is also stepping on the gas.

Their mission: to design an electrically powered racing car and then manufacture it themselves. Our WESTCAM experts were able to support them with know-how and high-quality milled parts for their vehicle.

The goal of around 50 students from the University of Innsbruck, MCI, UMIT and FH Kufstein? To take part in the international Formula Student design competition with their electric racing car and leave the competition teams with nothing but their tail lights!

Roll good, all good

Speed did not play a major role in this project – but the role itself did: As part of their diploma thesis, three students from HTL Innsbruck Anichstraße developed an innovative rescue device for use in alpine terrain during planned rescue operations.

The innovation? It is a differential pulley block operated with ropes. Previously, such pulley blocks were only operated with chains. To build the prototype, they enlisted the help of WESTCAM to manufacture the special parts required. The spiked pulley required for the recovery device , including a small locking lever, was produced in our 3D printer.

In the end, the students not only impressed us at WESTCAM with their innovative differential pulley block, but also the jury of various competitions. They took first place in each of the following competitions

  • Be the best: Competition of the Förderverein Technik Tirol
  • Jugend Innovativ (category Engineering I) in Vienna
  • Bosch Technology for Life Award (Industrial Technology category) in Linz
  • TINIP (Mechanical Engineering category) in Innsbruck

Excellent, we think, and are proud of the trio with the idea that saved the day!

HTL practical workshops

Boring lessons? Not at WESTCAM! Instead of dusty skeletons and theoretical experiments, we have 3D printed components and a practical example: using the fork bridge of a brand new designer motorcycle , we show you how an optimal digital process chain works.

We regularly invite interested HTL students to “lessons of a different kind” at the WESTCAM headquarters in Mils. From the idea and design to component optimization, production (additive + subtractive) and quality assurance, the students were able to follow how the Husqvarna Vitpilen 01 motorcycle was gradually brought to life.

Come and see us!

Both the students and our WESTCAM experts always have a lot of fun. If you would like to take part in the next HTL practical workshop, simply write to know-wow@westcam.at and we will let you know in good time.

WESTCAMP – Training for apprentices

Are you an apprentice and keen to gain new, practical knowledge that perfectly complements your apprenticeship training? Then we’re hot for you! Tell your boss to send you to “TECHcamp” – or to be more precise: WESTCAMP!

The WESTCAMPs are intensive courses for apprentices in which you gain new practical knowledge. They are a link between the company and vocational school and cover the best of both worlds. What will you learn?

… even more wild WESTCAM projects

Admittedly: We at WESTCAM are for sale. Especially for a good cause. If the whole thing comes with a lot of fun and a visit to the Ö3 studio, you don’t have to persuade us for long. That’s why we were happy to be on board when Gabi Hiller from Ö3 Wecker called us in 2019 and asked us to support her original Secret Santa gift idea for Robert Kratky and Andi Knoll.

Gabi Hiller’s “top secret” assignment: to build an Ö3 nativity scene – with Robert Kratky as the ox, Andi Knoll as the donkey and Gabi Hiller – how could it be otherwise – as the innocent angel. Under the pretext that the Ö3 social media department wanted to try out a new tool using 3D scanning, WESTCAM 3D-Metrology expert Harald Spiegel asked the three Ö3 presenters to stand in front of the “3D camera” in the Ö3 studio in Vienna.

Using a handheld 3D scanner from Artec, the three Ö3 heads and their color information were captured with high precision and projected into the digital world. The nativity figures were then produced in a 3D printer. The result is something to behold, isn’t it?

On 21.12.2019, the Secret Santa gift was ceremoniously presented to the ox and donkey… er… the presenters in the Ö3 Wishing Hut in Villach and then auctioned off in front of the Wishing Hut for the benefit of Licht ins Dunkel. The crib was not only a successful surprise for Robert Kratky and Andi Knoll, but also raised a total of € 4,846 for the good cause.

That was nothing yet? Do you have even wilder ideas? Challenge us!

We are happy to welcome any “young and wild” who would like to get a taste of the WESTCAM spirit. Whether you want to learn from our experts in the WESTCAMP apprentice course or in the HTL practical workshops…

… or you have a crazy idea for a thesis or student project where you need our support: Our 3DMetrology, 3D printing, CAD and CAM professionals are always happy to be challenged!
